Jim Wolf is a Disgrace; Dumpster Blows Save

With two outs in the bottom of the first inning last night, Ted Lilly plunks Edgar Renteria with a 2-0 pitch. Instead of acting like a man and taking his base, Renteria starts crying and walking towards the mound. Michael Barrett, veteran fighter, stepped in front of Renteria to prevent anything from happening. What Barrett should have done was start brawling with Renteria, tag a now shirtless Zambrano, and then two of them give Renteria a wishbone.

So the benches should be warned again, right? The Cubs have now retaliated for Soriano’s beaning and this should be the end of it, right? Wrong. Home plate umpire Jim Wolf then decides, out of the blue, that Lilly is ejected from the game. Are you kidding me? So let me get this straight. Alfonso Soriano can hit 3 home runs, completely embarrass the Braves pitching staff, get pegged the next day by a washed up tool, and the Cubs don’t get to do a single thing about it??? That makes sense. Jim Wolf should be suspended for being so stupid. And then Wolf has the balls to say he knew that was going to happen, that’s why he kicked out Lilly. Oh yeah, is that right Wolf? Ever thought to SAY THAT TO ANYBODY? Being a douchebag is one thing, being a douchebag and insulting everyone’s intelligence is another thing. If you “knew” that was going to happen, how come the benches weren’t warned before the game? If you “knew” that was going to happen, how come you didn’t tell Renteria when he was coming to the plate? If you “knew” that was going to happen, how come you didn’t PREVENT IT BEFORE IT HAPPENED? You know why he didn’t prevent? Because Jim Wolf is full of shit. So if you knew this all along, Jim Wolf, you know what that makes you? AN ACCESSORY. Hopefully Bud Selig comes down hard on you. Next time, shut your mouth and do your job. You warn the benches AFTER Lilly pegs Renteria. Now the score is settled. All order would be restored.

It ends there, right? Wrong again. Renteria, attempting to steal second, decides to slide when he’s almost past the base already. Oh, and he had his arm out, clothslining Mike Fontenot. Renteria was then immediately ejected from the game for his bush league antics. Wait, what’s that? He wasn’t? ARE YOU SERIOUS? Second base ump Jim Joyce, what were you thinking? I'm guessing he didn’t know Renteria was going to do that. He must not have the psychic powers that Jim Wolf has been blessed with.

As for the rest of the game, Ryan Dumpster blew the lead in the 8th and the Cubs lost 5-4. Lou might have to re-arrange the order of his bullpen. Bob Howry has been throwing smoke lately and would be a good option as the closer right now.

- Mike Fontenot crushed his first Major League homer, an absolute bomb off of Buddy Carlyle. But his biggest at-bat, bases loaded and nobody out in the 8th, ended in a double play. Fontenot hit a rocket to third, who went catcher to first on the double play.

- Jacque Jones went 0 -2. His average now sits at .234. Keep playing him Lou.

- Soriano-Pie-Lee went 0-12, with 7 left on base today.

- Cubs play a rainout makeup game at Wrigley vs. the Houston Astros tonight.

Renteria's "slide" was while he was attempting to steal second. Not break up a double play. Just saying.

If he had been trying to break up a double play, at least that might have provided some justification. But no, he's just a goon. He should be suspended after the fact.

Fortunately, Joe Morgan and Jon Miller didn't talk about any of this.

it's fun to watch you guys blame the cubbies suckitude on things other than the fact that they have an overmatched, washed up manager and a mishmash of overpriced players. soriano could hit three jacks a night and you'd still be below .500

Anyone that has watched Edgar Renteria since he came in the league knows that he is one of the most reserved and mild-mannered guys in baseball. To see the way he reacted, he had to have truly believed he was being thrown at. To call Edgar Renteria a "goon" is outrageous. The "goons" can be found on the Cubs side of the box score (e.g. Zambrano going nuts and throwing at Cardinal hitters a few years ago for no other reason than he was getting rocked, Barrett decking A.J. Pierzynski, regardless of A.J. being a complete douche, Zambrano and Barrett fighting one another, Ted Lilly fighting his own manager). Find me one prior instance of Renteria acting the way he did.

no big surprises last night, but sometimes it is exciting to see how they blow the game. this time they went with the classic "dumpster maneuver"

The best part of the game was Renteria getting pulled from the game with a strained labia.

He should go "ingest" some more "supplements" to ensure that he doesn't slide back into his Red Sox form...

Hey man, I like the blog. So, even as a huge Braves fan, I totally agree. It was ridiculous to have thrown Lilly out of the game but even more ridiculous for not doing anything when Renteria came in hard to second. On a different note (and maybe I just have this perspective because we didn't get the short end of the stick) I thought it was a pretty exciting series to watch.
