The Cubs appear to have 2 trade options so far for Scott Eyre.
Sean McAdams of The Providence Journal writes that the Boston Red Sox still have interest in Scott Eyre:The Red Sox had interest in Eyre before the non-waiver trading deadline, and are still monitoring him as a lefty specialist.
They could either try again to work out a deal — if Eyre clears waivers — or claim him on waivers. Still another route might be waiting for him to clear and then offering him a contract.
The Philadelphia Phillies are also showing interest according to the Assistant GM of the Phillies, Ruben Amaro Jr.:Amaro said the Phillies are interested in left-handed reliever Scott Eyre who was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. The 36-year old lefty went 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in 19 appearances this season sandwiched around two DL stints.
A contender will want Scott Eyre, it's only a matter of time before the Cubs pull the trigger on the deal. Eyre had recently set the Cubs all-time record with 33 consecutive scoreless appearances, but Lou Piniella loves his flame throwers in the set-up role. Samardzija, Howry, Marmol, Gaudin, and Wood all fit that bill. Eyre does not.
Jon Lieber is set to come off the DL soon & is rehabbing right now with the Peoria Chiefs. Do the Cubs DFA Jon Leiber as well, or will they send down Sean Marshall, Neal Cotts, or Jeff Samardzija and then immediately recall when the time comes with the September 1st roster expansion coming up?
